Musings from My Grade One Couch: Analysis of Gulfstream Park for April 23rd, 2020

Sunday’s Rainbow 6 was tough to say the least! Congrats to all who hit, with only one winning favorite in the 6 race sequence. The payout was a rewarding $20,158 for a 20 cent wager. With the mandatory payout, we start afresh for a Thursday.
Heres hoping you and yours are well and healthy moving into week 5 of self isolation. If you are wondering, I have started to name the various members of my burgeoning Aviary in the garden. Henry the Hummingbird just popped his head through the sliding door (I fear he may want my cadburys cream egg!!)
10 race card starting at 1pm ET.

Race 1) Turf 1Miles|3Md 12500(12.5-10.5)|Purse: $17k|

#10) Laska 3-1 ~TOP PICK , looms boldly as the one to beat. Drops to the bottom after a troubled trip for $25k. Numbers tower above the rest . Single

Race 2) 6 1/2 Furlongs|3Md 16000|Purse: $19k

#6) Cabrina 5-2 ~TOP PICK, 98-1 in debut and ran a HUGE race. Had she been ready when the gates opened, she would have been much much closer to a clear winner. Draws the middle of the pack and gets an extra furlong … after such a resolute and professional debut (sans the start) I don’t see her getting beaten here!

Race 4) Dirt 1 Mile|3Clm 6250N2L|Purse: $16k

#4) Time to Two Step 4-1~TOP PICK, 52 Beyer in last, the highest (last start) in this field. Makes logical cut in 1/2 after breaking the maiden for $12,500. Walden winning at a gaudy 38% for the meet. Should get a good stalking trip.

#1) Samoa 6-1~PRICE. Pace makes the race and this field is devoid of the latter. Filly by Brethren may get the lonely lead she needs …. DANGEROUS !!

Race 5) Turf 1 Mile|4Alw 32000s|Purse: $29k
Intriguing race with many ways to go here, note the rails are at a massive 115 feet from the inside portion of the turf course. This plays to a good draw and speed.

#7 Valdolobo 7-2 ~TOP PICK gutsy five-year-old gelding doesn’t run a lot, but when he does he’s well placed and loves to run fresh. Unraced since January when sitting next to a hot pace; he drew clear easily. This however, is the first time he hasn’t been dangled for a tag in 3 stateside starts. I like this as it shows confidence from a trainer who doesn’t misplace his stock. Gets the hustling Saez who will ensure a good trip. Perfect at GP too!

#3) Tricky Magician 3-1 ~should get the pace he needs this time to sit in the pocket and pounce.

#5) Carbon Data 6-1 ~LONGSHOT ~ Now seven-years-old this gelding hasn’t seen the races since August 2018. If he can return to his best, he deserves a chance underneath. Comes in with a strong series of works including a 59 3/5 March 30. Trainer Eppler 4-16 off 300 day layoffs!!! ( Thank you DRF’s David Aragona for that stat!)

Race 6) Dirt 1 Mile|3OC 16k/N1X|Purse: $41k

#2) Untitled 6-5~TOP PICK ~ will be a single on many peoples tickets! For obvious reasons .

Race 7) Turf 1 Mile|4Alw 50000s|Purse: $33k|

#9) Grand Journey 6-1 Pretty evenly matched group IMHO, therefore I am looking for a bit of a price. Gelding by Giant’s Causeway comes in fresh with solid am drills and has a stellar record at GP, winning 5 of 9!!

#6 Gemonteer 7-1 ~ The horse with the best hair ( seriously check out his forelock ) is looking for a softer spot to land after dueling efforts in G3 company. Will be interesting to see tactics here as recent work ( some time ago I may add ) March 22 he looked quite comfortable sitting off a horse and finishing nicely when asked.

Race 8) Dirt 7 Furlongs|3YOOC50k/SAL50k|Purse: $33k

#2) Money Never Sleeps 3-1 ~ TOP PICK ~progressive sort seems to be getting better with each and every start , don’t think the turn back a furlong will be a problem as there is plenty of speed in here to ensue a lively pace.

#5) Bird Map 7-2 ~ I feel is liable to go favored here due to her connections plus the barn has been on fire of late !

Race 9) Turf 1Miles|4OC 62k/N2X|Purse: $47k

#1) Temple 3-1 ~TOP PICK Typical Maker runner , gutsy and consistently running top numbers, should be closing fasted of all.

#8) Award Winner 20-1 ~LONGSHOT , I find it hard to believe he will go off 20-1 with barns stats 3rd off the bench 36% and Bravo to ride as well. Couldn’t possibly be doing any better as April 11 work was a cruise control masterpiece.
