Musings from My Grade One Couch: Gulfstream Park Analysis for April 16th, 2020

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and its a balmy 78 degrees …. I am obviously in CA desperately awaiting of the return of racing in the imminent future ~ fingers crossed! Meanwhile, racing goes on sans spectators at Gulfstream Park with an 11 race card on Thursday to kick off the week.

Race 1) $20L CLAIMERS N2L TURF 1 1/16 (rails 48 feet )

#1) Aerodynamic 4-1 ~TOP PICK, others will be favored here as this filly is facing winners for the first time after being claimed off top connections~ she won fairly easily and adds blinkers . With the rails at 48 feet, and this race devoid of any real pace, perhaps she can steal away and never be caught at a bit of a price from the one hole.

#6) She Fled the Scene 5-2 ~ Logical choice , drops in price and has the best numbers of all …..just think the extra 1/16 won’t help her cause.

Race 2 ) 2 YEAR OLD FILLIES MSW 4 1/2 FURLONGS

It’s that time of the year, my very favorite time …

#2) Lime ~TOP PICK ~ 7-5 , One would have to think any other time most of Wesley’s two-year-olds would be running at Keeneland ( hence 47 2/5 gate work Kee)
Work on the turf 4/11 was good, and everything you could expect, brilliant debut sire (40%) Iqbaa( Medaglia d’Oro) who won on debut for Kiaran McLaughlin .

#1) Awesome View 7-2 ~ another Jacks or Better alum, by their terrific sire Awesome of Course. Out of a full sister to G1 Sprinter Jackson Bend .

#8) Quinoa Tifah 9-2 ~ this cleverly named daughter of Gemologist (hits with debut runners at 15%) comes in with an active worktab. She a 1/2 to a stakes winner at 2, but to look at her, she’s huge, but also very athletic and well drawn on the outside – could be dangerous at a price ??? Her workmate Gatsby is a 2 year old colt in on Friday !

Race 3 ) 5 FURLONGS ON TURF MDN CLAIMER $25K

#9 Violent Fight 6-1 ~TOP PICK , Son of Violence had a nice breeze around there in debut 2 weeks ago, splitting the field , Tyler sticks and should be in the mix a little earlier . Cuts price tag in half . Barn Heating up….

#4) Weekend Dreamer ~7-2 Son of Candy Ride was meant for better , but did run very well first out on the turf, getting beat a scant neck . Keeps Torres

#1) Mr.Vecchio 8-1 ~ interesting sort , does own a rather sporty breeze  seen here Feb 22 )but …. Did miss the whole of March ?? Gelding by very good debut sire Palace ~ PRICE .

Race 5) MDN $50K CLAIMER 1 MILE ON TURF (rails 48 feet )

#6) Marais 10-1 ~ TOP PICK ~ debuting for top connections and from a Top class family .Comes in with a very good work locking heads March 28 with MSW winner Lashara who turned heads after her debut last week. 10-1 if you can get it.

#3) Stormy Derby Day 15-1 . Chestnut Daughter of Go Get Stormy (sound familiar) has run well in both starts. Number jumped last out whence trying a MSW. With that race under her belt and the drop back down to $50K,  LIVE LONG SHOT !!!!

#5) Wicked Mercury ~7-2 must be respected.

Race 6) 1MILE TURF $30K CLAIMERS N2L

#5) Bourbon Currency 7-2 ~TOP PICK. Ran a huge race off a year layoff . Hopefully the now five-year-old gelding who surely needed his last can stretch to the mile distance.

#4) Joyful Heat ~4-1

Race 7) N2L $25K Claimers 1 mile

#3 January Won 3-1 ~TOP PICK ~ son of New Years Day was in graded stakes co right after breaking his maiden; the norm nowadays. I have always liked this horse, having followed him closely last Saratoga so I will stick with him ….But why give up so quickly ?? Beware.

Race 9) 6 FURLONGS OC/16K/NW1

#1) Cajun Brother 8-1 ~ TOP PICK ~ Taking a swing here with a MDN winner against multiple winners and older horses early in his 3 year old year. Heres why, poor sod was drawn 1/10 in debut, is drawn 1/11 here; has shown he can handle that. Gets a 6-8 lb swing in weights from most in here. Comes in with a bullet work . Exits live race! Trainer Yates 19% 1st start off MDN win.

#6) R Mercedes Boy 4-1 – Salty Gelding will be tough if back to best.

Race 10) 5 FURLONGS TURF OC25K/NW1X

#4) QUARKY 7-2 ~TOP PICK . Gelding runs well fresh for underrated connections ( Mike Dini is an excellent horseman ) 5/8 off the layoff should be perfect.
