Musings from My Grade One Couch: Gulfstream Park Analysis for April 5th, 2020

I am currently being stared down by my one eyed feral cat “Buc” (named for a local watering hole; I may or may not frequent), as we continue into week 2 of “safer at home” orders. Let me tell you he is not amused! The dog is on hunger strike, as a main staple to his diet has been a freshly chopped up sausage (he won’t eat it otherwise???) from Clockers Corner for as long as he can remember (he lives with a vegetarian ) ….Anyhow if that the worst that is happening, we are doing alright !

Racing continues at Gulfstream this Sunday (Thanks be to God!) with an 11 race card starting at 1pm Eastern.

Race 3) $10k CLAIMER FOR FILLIES AND MARES GOING 6 FURLONGS

#2 Kiffle ~ TOP PICK, the one to beat here for sure, gets back on preferred surface after a solid outing going 2 turns on the turf.

Race 5) STATE BRED MSW FOR FILLIES AND MARES 3 YEARS OLD AND UP , 6 FURLONGS

#8 Seayouathebreakers ~TOP PICK , draws cozily on the outside and attracts Rosario. The daughter of terrific sire Hard spun is out of Calistoga, who won her first 2 starts and is a full sister to stakes winner Almond Roca. As far as her works are concerned, they are terrific, her most recent with Penny Gardener aboard working on the outside of Smirk, a 3 year old Mdn by Blame. She easily is best in this drill. READY

#1 Starship Voyager ~ is another who has been working very well in the morning. Her local gate work was excellent, leaving there sharply and easily disposing of her company. Her sire Big Drama also has a good record with debut runners; her trainer however not so much??

Race 6) MSW FILLIES AND MARES 3 AND UP , 5 FURLONGS ON TURF (RAILS AT 60 FEET )

#1 Gotta Go Mo ~TOP PICK, Daughter of Uncle Mo is first foal from the stakes winning Mare Hardtostaynotgo. She draws a good spot on the rail, and clearly is the one to beat. Her solo work on March 28 is everything you want to see, a happy healthy filly with her ears pricked just cruising around the dogs.

#3 No No Nina, a must use in here .The daughter of More Than Ready got in a tad of trouble in her (off the turf) debut, but what it really shows is she is screaming out for Turf. Her local work shows that too, albeit a good one she just struggles a bit at the end, although I fear that is a monster working beside her: an unraced $310K Fasig-Tipton grad by the name of Uncle George ~he’s a RUNNER.

#9 Meadow Beauty ~ should be viewed as a first time starter. She has since come back and worked out of the gate since losing her rider at the start of a March 4 MSW. EJ Bowler did a great job of staying on as she left an fell on her face leaving there, she did regain her composer and actually work rather well after the fact. DANGEROUS

#2 Backside Beauty ~ will get some play due to her trainer fabulous 32% debut strike rate….but even though the work tab is solid, sporting a 59 3/5 turf work, the proof is in the pudding !!! Working very greenly in solo drill wearing blinkers < she looks like she doesn’t want to dance alone and is begging for company. 1/2 sib is Tempermint Patty who won on debut ???? PUZZLING

Race 8) ONE MILE TURF MSW 3 YEAR OLDS

#11 Shamrocket ~TOP PICK ran a big race last out whilst unsettled early. Gets a rider switch to Rosario which is key as he would manage to put a kid with ADHD to sleep.

#10 Reliability ~ well bred son of tacit was born to route on grass, had the proverbial “give him one” for  Jerkins with an easy maintenance drill in the interim. Gets blinkers on, which can only help.

#3 Scanno ~ one base sort who will stay for days.

#8 Riggins ~ will garner a lot of attention being a 1/2 to G1 winner Papa Clem and recent G1 winner CeCe.  However both of those ran on dirt. This guy is now a gelding, debuts on turf and  has not really shown a lot in AM drills . Will need one!

Race 10) 6 FURLONG NW1X

#2 Up in Smoke ~ TOP PICK  Daughter of The Big Beast has not disappointed in 2 starts and her last was visually impressive. She hasn’t run the biggest numbers, but feel she is a filly who will only get better with racing.

##4 Alandra ~ G1 placed as a two year old, she has run against some heady commotion and surely need her last for Shug … bred to go longer!
