Musings from My Grade One Couch: Santa Anita Park Analysis for May 22nd, 2020

Race 1) Dirt 4ô Furlongs|2YODMd Sp Wt 50k|Purse: $50k

#2 Teton Valley – Hails from the red hot Hanson barn, and is by terrific 20% debut sire Tapiture. Hoping he broke a tad sharper on May 2 work … but heres hoping he gets the jump on the O’Neill runners who will be right there as well.

#5 Ingest – Gets Doug’s go too rider and will be favored over stablemate drawn right next to him. Good looking work on May 18 and colt is superbly bred for this.

#3 Tripp a Matic – See below, but this is a win early pedigree and he could be long gone, only worry point is he is already a gelding??? I wonder why?

#1 Positivity – Shows 7 recorded works at Dixi Downs, a place that has long ben know to host “training races” to stage a race day situation and I’m sure this one even breaking from the 1 hole will be prepped to the nines for this. Mendez already has a 2 year old winner (Love Wins) with similar works from Dixi Downs.

Race 2) Dirt 5ô Furlongs|3lcClm 25000N2L|Purse: $22k

#2 Dorita’s Lemon – I have a feeling the Mark Glatt trained #7 Hot on the Trail will take all the money. I’m just not in love with her although I can’t talk you off her. I do prefer Dorita’s Lemon, purely for the fact her morning works have been full of zip she looks happy and is a debut winner looking to go 2 for 2!

Race 3) Dirt 5ô Furlongs|3lcClm 25000N2L|Purse: $22k – Rail 30

#4 Swing Thoughts – In for a tag and fits the condition. 4 year old knows how to win races and makes a much need drop in trip and picks up a rider who certainly knows this turf course very well. Pace a plenty in a short field, look for her to come flying late. Local work on dirt was good and sharp despite not being on her preferred surface.

#1 Cheap Cheap Cheap – Must have needed her last at big odds and will get a good trip from the rail.

Race 4) Dirt 1Â Miles|3lcMd 20000|Purse: $17k

#1 Manresa – Not much pace signed on here, filly gets the shades on and should be the best of the rest here.

Race 5) Turf 1 Mile|3lOC 62k/N2X|Purse: $53k- Rail 30

#1 Odysseus – The well bred son of Candy Ride has shown a touch of brilliance in both of his local wins, one short and one long. Faces toughest task to date but I feel he’s up for it, Local dirt works are never stunning but look the same- he loves the green stuff!

#8 King of Speed – may just be that in here with Smith. Ran the best number of his life in the G3 San Simeon in March off a long layoff …..very dangerous.

Race 6) Turf 1 Mile|3lOC 62k/N2X|Purse: $53k

#10 Papa Turf – Tough not to love this wonderful 9 year old, his last win coming at Los Al against QUARTER HORSES going 870!!!

Race 8) Dirt 1 Mile|3lOC 40k/N1X|Purse: $51k

#8 Nolo Contesto – Perhaps this can be his coming out party. He has always been a colt with talent but hasn’t lived up to the hype. The son of Pioneerof the Nile has never been a good work horse, but his works of late have been….more than holding his own with G1 winner Higher Power. Maybe, just maybe, he has turned the corner.

#7 Tizamagician – Odd spot for a colt who may or may not be on the Derby Trail. Faces older for the first time but will be in the receipt of 6 llb. Solid solo work for a colt by Tiznow who just seems to be getting taller and taller.

Race 9) Dirt 1 Mile|3lOC 40k/N1X|Purse: $51k – Rail 30

#7 Rose’s Crystal – gets the shades off for Gaines who hits at 20% with this angle. DVD gets the call and even with the lack of pace in here I feel she may be a bit sharper and fresher for her first start for Gaines off a short layoff. Good solo work!

#6 On Mars – hard not to ignore the next out winners she has run against, Bella Vita 2nd in the Evening Jewel last weekend. Big strapping filly should be well spotted for first try around 2 turns with Smith. Work shown below is with #8 Too Hot for Curlin also in here.
